The monkey is a monkey and quest item used in the Monkey Madness quest. During the quest, the player is tasked with saving a monkey from the Ardougne Zoo in order to earn the trust of Awowogei. Players obtain a monkey by wielding a monkey greegree and then talking to the Monkey Minder to be put into the cage with the other monkeys. Afterwards, they must talk to a monkey with their monkeyspeak amulet and convince it to get into their inventory. To get out of the cage, players must unequip the greegree and speak with the Monkey minder who will remove them from the cage. Players cannot teleport with the monkey in their inventory, and it cannot be banked. Using any form of teleportation will make the monkey disappear from their inventory.
Dropping the monkey will cause it to leave and wander around for a bit, although it will disappear after about 30 seconds. It can be picked up again by talking to it. If the monkey is dropped on the island of Karamja, however, it will turn into an ordinary Monkey and exclaim 'Yay! I'm free!', rewarding the player with 197.1 Thieving experience.
While in the inventory, the monkey can be poked, much to its annoyance, and it will often interrupt the player. It can be fed bananas, monkey nuts, monkey bars, and banana stew by using them on him, although he will claim to not want the latter items despite eating them anyway. He will also randomly eat any bananas in the inventory even if they aren't used on him.
At any point during or after the quest, the monkey has a rare chance (1 in 256) of spitting out a medium clue scroll if he is fed a banana, although this only works once. It is recommended to buy bananas off the Grand Exchange and feed the monkey at a bank. This will display the message The monkey chews on the banana and spits out a clue! in the chatbox. To obtain the clue scroll, the player must not have reached the cap of 25 sealed and active combined medium difficulty clue scrolls in their inventory or bank; however, another difficulty clue scroll won't interfere. Do not skip the dialogue when feeding the monkey, as it will not count as an attempt towards the clue scroll. Holding down the spacebar while feeding the monkey bananas is an easy way to make sure the dialogue doesn't get skipped.
Receiving a medium clue scroll from this monkey by feeding it bananas completes the achievement Clue's in the Monkey Drool, which is a requirement to obtain the master quest cape.

Update history[edit | edit source]
- patch9 June 2009 (Update):
- Changed the code dealing with monkeys in backpacks on a free world.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
Monkey Quest Wiki
- It was previously possible to drop or release the monkey in a free-to-play world. This has now been fixed.
- Attempting to put the monkey in the bank prompts the message: Sorry, you can't bank the monkey. which is possibly a play on the phrase 'Spank the monkey'.
- Prior to the Clue Scroll Overhaul on 26 February2018, players could not have more than one of each tier of clue scroll. They would therefore need to ensure that they searched through their bank before attempting to gain the clue scroll so that they would not be blocked by a forgotten scroll already in their possession.
